I’m sure there are also other areas of the school in need of air conditioning, but my daughter (a new sixth grader at MS447 this year) mentioned specifically how much the middle-schoolers swelter during lunch in a cafeteria without air conditioning. I too experienced this hot box during last Spring’s orientation. The large fans provide little relief, and, according to my daughter, “are all pointed towards the high schoolers” (MS447 shares a campus with a high school). My idea for PBNYC is to fund air conditioning for the parts of MS447 where it is missing (which will benefit middle- and high-schoolers alike). There are enough distractions and challenges to learning in NYC schools. Let’s make sure heat and humidity are not one of them.
