While the protected bike lanes on 9th street are wonderful, the issue of the unsafe intersections remains. In some instances the risk has been heightened by the protected bike lanes since the bikes are shooting out of the lane as cars are turning and the visibility is blocked by parked cars (sometimes parked illegally into the crosswalk). Also, when the B61 is at a stop, it blocks the lane, causing bikers to shoot out into the car lane. There are many options for things like floating bus stops, bumpouts, bike boxes, etc. But the changes, and the process, can be expensive. This would enhance an existing DOT project to help it reach its safety goals.
