New sod for lawn at East Fourth Street Community Garden, part of GreenThumb/NYC Parks No ratings yet.

Hello, I’ve been a volunteer garden member for about seven years now. In all that time, we’ve had problems maintaining the grass in our lawn area (about 40 feet by 20 feet?). As far as I’m aware, there’s never been a resodding of the space. Our community garden, which is overseen by GreenThumbs and NYC Parks, is planted on top of the fill and construction debris left over from when the F train tracks were put in during the 1930s. After that construction, the garden was used as a dumping ground until 1978, when the community garden was begun, so who knows what is in that soil? We’d like to scrape down a layer, add dirt and put in sod. It would also be great to do this because we have been holding more and more events over the past few years (and the lawn is our prime performance area), and we’d like to have a more lush space to offer our visitors. One of our garden members has obtained an estimate of $1,200 for the resodding.
