The high school admission process into specialized schools is inequitable due to the SHSAT. Parents with resources can afford test prep for this exam, which usually costs at least $1000 for a group class and much more for individual tutoring. There are some free classes in place for low income families, but not nearly enough to address the inequities, especially for students of color. I propose that students in or approaching 8th grade have easy access to free SHSAT test prep classes, especially in Title 1 middles schools. These could also be offered in the public libraries based on income eligibility with both online and weekend registration to make this easily accessible to all parents and caregivers.
