At one time curbs were painted yellow to designate no parking areas around hydrants. Without them drivers are left to make judgement on appropriate distance from the hydrant. Some drivers aren’t aware of the legal distance. As a result, many times the hydrant is blocked, creating a hazard. Or, the cars are too far from the hydrant, taking away much needed spaces. With yellow curb marking, drivers would not be left to make incorrect judgement for parking. Safety concerns would be ameliorated, parking spaces maximized, and fewer citations based on lack of awareness or perceptual errors.
