idling motor vehicles and air pollution 5/5 (1)

I am suggesting to kickstart an initiative to seriously address the pervasive habit of New Yorkers (private citizens, truck drivers, city employees, etc.) to idle their vehicles. While some lip service has been paid by officials, this is a serious public health issue, which continues to be ignored almost entirely. There is virtually zero enforcement of existing laws. Idling substantially contributes to air pollution, and traffic related air pollution has been linked to a multitude of health issues. Besides the obvious ones (respiratory illnesses, higher likelihood to suffer more serious consequences of COVID-19, lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc.) traffic related air pollution also leads to delayed brain maturation in children, learning problems, ADHD, and mental health issues, including a higher risk of dementia in older people. In addition, idling is wasteful and contributes to our climate crisis. I am advocating to finance staff enforcing the existing idling laws. The tickets issued will more than pay for the cost of any such staff. We will all be breathing better air as a result
